Femme Fatale Exhibit
Femme Fatale is a series of woodcut prints exploring the relationship between femininity, beauty, and danger through the imagery of carnivorous plants. Inspired by the species found in Smith College’s Lyman Plant House and Conservatory, the exhibition challenges traditional associations between femininity and softness, delicacy, and gentleness. Carnivorous plants possess an undeniable beauty, yet beneath their striking forms lies a predatory nature: they must capture and consume to survive. Through the use of complementary color relationships and the repeated imagery of these plants, Femme Fatale explores the tension between attraction and intimidation, fragility and strength, and beauty and brutality. Drawing connections between the natural world and the experience of femininity, the exhibition invites viewers to reconsider what it means to be feminine and challenges the expectation that femininity must always be gentle or accommodating. Instead, Femme Fatale embraces a femininity that is complex, powerful, and unapologetically dangerous.
