<p>Active Minds, Inc. is the only organization working to utilize the student voice to change the conversation about mental health on college campuses. Smith's own chapter is a student-run mental health awareness, education, and advocacy group on campus, working
to increase students’ awareness of mental health issues through events, workshops and panels, provide information and resources regarding mental health and mental illness, encourage students to seek help as soon as it is needed, and serve as liaison between
students, Counseling Services and the Wellness Department.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Al-Iman is a Muslim Student Organization affiliated with the National MSA network. The objective is to create an environment for Muslims and allies to bond in open spaces exploring Islam and the Muslim identity. In reaching this goal, the organization plans social events, organizes lectures, and holds spiritual spaces, conducive to growth and unity in and outside of the Muslim community. With Islam grounding the org, Al-Iman takes on both a spiritual and social role while also centering our civic and global responsibility to humanity. Through the work or this organization, we hope to increase the personal and communal understanding of the beauty of Islam and its true tenants of Iman (faith), Salam (peace), and Khidmat (service).</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Celebration is an annual event focused on unifying the campus and celebrating love&nbsp;in all its forms.&nbsp;It takes place on Wilson house steps and begins with a candlelight vigil which serves as a reminder of homophobic and transphobic incidents on campus and in the greater community.&nbsp;Then, Smith houses and student organizations are invited to&nbsp;perform songs, dances, and poetry to celebrate loving without boundaries.&nbsp;</span></p>

<p>ConBust as an organization exists to prepare, throughout the year, for the ConBust convention that occurs&nbsp;in the first week of&nbsp;April&nbsp;(this year, March 27- March 29 2020). The convention itself lasts for three days over a weekend and serves to highlight the
role of women and minorities in Sci-Fi and Fantasy. Events include panels, tabletop gaming, artist and dealer rooms, cosplay, guests of all kinds, and much more!</p>
<p>At the beginning of the year, there is a general interest meeting in which any Smith student can volunteer to be a staff member to help with the preparations. At a typical meeting, each staff member reports on the progress on assigned tasks, asks for help
from the other members, and coordinates with the Head ConChair(s). There are usually between 12 and 18 staff members in a given year.</p>

FRN redistributes excess prepared food from Smith College to Northampton community members experiencing food insecurity. We collect data from every pan of food we recover and share our findings with Smith Dining Services, enabling them to implement more informed and sustainable ordering practices. Student volunteers rescue food every day across campus, reducing food waste, decreasing CO2 emissions from discarded and composted food, and supplying our partner, Manna Community Kitchen, with the resources they need to support their work fighting food insecurity.

<p>Fun Run Smith is a non-competitive running club, open to runners of all levels of experience. SMIRC, a competitive branch of Fun Run, open to runners with at least some experience (not a strict cut off but most members run a 5k in under 25 min).&nbsp;</p>
<p>Members can choose to participate in local 5k (3.2miles), 10k (6.4 miles) and half marathons (13.1 miles) such as Fall Foliage and Cider Run at Amherst College, Hot Chocolate Run at Smith College, and Dash and Dine at Umass Amherst! SMIRC members participate in intercollegiate races.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Fun Run is a great way to get some exercise, explore the area, and meet new people.</p>

<p class="x_p1"><span class="x_s1">The mission of Global Medical Brigades is to work with licensed medical professionals and community health workers to provide comprehensive health services in rural communities in Guatemala, Honduras, Ghana, and Panama.&nbsp;These communities have limited access to health care and the facilities that exist are often severely understaffed and lacking in medical supplies, leaving families with ailments both untreated and undiagnosed, sometimes for an entire lifetime. To help resolve this disparity, Global Brigades has developed a medical program with the goal to provide consistent access to healthcare using an economically sustainable model. The Smith College chapter systematically works with more than 400 other university groups around the world to deliver and implement the medical program.</span></p>

<p>We are Hell's Belles Fencing, Smith College's resident fencing team! We hold practice four days a week and participate in regional competitions with both club and varsity teams. We are open to all levels of experience from "never have touched a sword" to "I teach it."&nbsp;If you'd like to stay up to date on what's happening in our team, follow us on Instagram @smithfencing, or contact us to get put on our contact list!</p>

<p>We, the House Presidents (HP) of Smith College, form the House Presidents Association (HPA), whose goal is to create an open and productive forum for community living. In addition, the HPA will serve as a link between the&nbsp;residential campus and the college. The HPA will establish standards for the&nbsp;community within the framework of self-governance and create change based&nbsp;on informed decisions with regard to all parties involved. We will work with key departments and leaders in the college to resolve our community&rsquo;s concerns. It is&nbsp;the responsibility of the HPA to support each house in its traditions and&nbsp;encourage the positive growth of individual house community and Smith&nbsp;College as a whole. The HPA is a voice for the student residential community&nbsp;within the Student Government Association structure and so will actively and&nbsp;responsively represent students on housing matters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The purpose of Latin American Students' Organization (LASO) is to provide a support network for Latin American students at Smith College while actively creating, assisting, and maintaining a safe space for students who share similar cultural backgrounds. LASO welcomes people of all backgrounds regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, religion/ spirituality, class, ability, gender expression, sexual orientation, or immigration status. LASO strives to embrace an active cultural, social, and political exchange between students at Smith and the other colleges of the Pioneer Valley, promote and educate members and the greater Smith community about injustices facing Latin Americans on Smith&rsquo;s campus as well as the rest of the world, and generate unity and understanding between Latin Americans of different backgrounds.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The e-board members of LASO are elected through the democratic action of election. The e-board, known as MESA, consists of 2 co-chairs, 1 treasurer, 1 secretary, 2 social chairs, 2 publicity chairs, 2 five college reps, 2 conference chairs, 2 alumnae reps, 1 historian, 2 first year liaisons, 2 community service reps, and of course our general body members.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The two co-chairs are responsible for overseeing organizational meetings, events, conferences, and the group as a whole. The treasurer handles all the finances of LASO, mostly dealing with the money allotted through the SGA. The two social chairs are responsible for organizing Taste of Latin America (TOLA) and Pa'lante. The secretary records the minutes of each LASO meeting and is responsible for typing and emailing them to the general body. The publicity chairs are responsible for advertising for all events thrown by LASO, they work in conjunction with the 5-college representative in publicizing events throughout the five-college community. The 5-college representative serves as a liaison between Smith and the 5-college community; attends 5-college rep. meetings; plans and organizes 5-college events in order to create ways for our communities/organizations to interact and collaborate; establishes a 5-college committee to assist with events and planning throughout the year. The conference chairs keep the general body informed about all Latin American conferences and compiles an organized list of previous and future conferences. The alumnae reps. act as the liaison between ALAS and LASO, as well as the liaison between the Assistant Director of Alumnae Outreach and the general body. The historian organizes annual photo albums submits material about LASO to the Archives, and yearbook; makes displays or presentations about the organization in the past; takes members pictures, mesa pictures, as well as event pictures, general body pictures, and individual class pictures.</p>

<p>The LASO Dance Group Coordinator promotes and teaches dance as a means to educate the community about our Latin-American roots and traditions. The community service reps. are key to opening and maintaining close ties with the community outside of Smith College. The General Body members support and maintain the organization.</p>

Come see what the coolest people on campus spend their time doing...</p>
<p>Join us on the fields where 4-5 days a week we run, throw, catch, and learn to perform other such athletic feats (and look cool doing them!). On the weekends we adventure to exciting East Coast locales including Vermont!, New Hampshire!, Connecticut!, and other parts of Massachusetts! for exhilarating tournaments where we test our skills against other teams (and sometimes get them to dance with us).</p>

<p>Smith Model United Nations is an organization that is focused on debating international issues. Every week, we meet to discuss a current, historical, or fictional topic, with each of us representing a country or character with a stake in the issue. Over a few weeks, we argue, negotiate, and write resolutions to try to solve the problem, and then we pick a new topic. Annually, we participate in running the Five College Model United Nations Conference as crisis directors, chairs, and staffers for their committees. We also attend the Harvard National Model United Nations Conference as delegates, and are planning to go to more conferences in the future. <p>MISC strives to create safe spaces for mixed race, multi-ethnic students and transracial adoptees (adoptees whose adoptive parents are a different race than them) to share and discuss our experiences. <p>Pan Asians in Action (PAiA) is a support and activist group focused on uniting the Asian/American/Pacific Islander community at Smith College to enact social change. We are committed to learning about social justice, teaching ourselves and others about political issues related to the AAPI community, and fostering inclusivity within our organization. We also wish to work as allies for other social justice causes that affect people not solely related to AAPI identities, in consideration of the intersectionality of oppression. As an activist group, we will host discussions and panels, work towards campaigns on and off campus, and engage with the 5 College AAPI activist community.</p>
<p>Given that approximately a quarter of Smith students identify as Asian/American/Pacific Islander we find that it is necessary to unite and recognize this large and diverse community (South Asian, East Asian, Southeast Asian, Pacific-Islander, Multi-Racial, Multi-Ethnic, Transnational, Adoptee, etc.) while also critically looking at where these identities diverge and intersect through activism and discussion that we had previously not found in other student organizations.</p>

<p>Smith College Synchro is a club sport. As a club, we left behind the formal, old-school style of the sport and created a joyful splash-friendly synchro style that focuses on inclusivity. We are the oldest club on campus, recently celebrating our 100th anniversary!</p>

<p>While we do not go to competitions, we do put on an incredible show at the end of each semester! Each show has a unique music theme and is open to the public. We practice once a week as a full team, Thursdays from 7-9 PM, and once a week in separate groups, Tuesday or Sunday. We do warm-ups together, both on land and in the pool, and then work on our choreography. You will learn the basic sculls (swim strokes) that we use to move around, eggbeater (synchro version of treading water), how to hold your breath underwater for a while, and a variety of cool moves to practice, like helicopter, crane, and pinwheel. You will be surprised how much you can learn in a semester- most of our swimmers had never done synchro before college! We hope you join our family!</p>

<p>We offer two levels of membership based on intended commitment to the club (not experience-based):</p>

<p><strong>2. Studio membership</strong> costs $10-$30 per semester. Students complete a training orientation and then can access the studio for independent work time 7 days a week, 7am-10pm. <p>As a volunteer student organization on campus, the Bike Kitchen strives to educate and provide for a diverse community. People of all backgrounds (ESPECIALLY with no experience!) are invited to learn how to take apart, rebuild, and maintain bikes. We rent bikes per semester and also have a work-trade program in which students are encouraged to trade volunteer hours in exchange for access to a bike. Although the Bike Kitchen was started as a leisure club, it has moved more and more into the realm of social justice, and we constantly strive to restitute inequality through the power of mechanical engineering, sustainability, and reclamation of what is "leisure!"</p>

Smith College Cheerleading has been featured in the Hampshire Gazette, Smith Alumnae Quarterly, and Inside Cheerleading Magazine, as well as on NPR New England.&nbsp;<br /><br />We are a fun group of Smith students that enjoys cheering on our athletes, continuing to improve our athletic abilities, both as individuals and as a team, and participating in community events throughout the year. <p>Smith Equestrian encompasses both the competitive hunt seat team and the non-competing club riders. We are a diverse group of Smithies ranging in experience from beginners to advanced riders. Some team members have been riding their whole lives, and some started their riding careers with Smith Equestrian. Our team members have ridden in equitation, show jumping, dressage, western, saddle seat, and everything in between.</p>
<p>Whether you major in Classics, SWAG, Engineering, Astronomy, or any of Smith&rsquo;s 50 majors, you can compete with the team while still pursuing a rigorous academic experience. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Glee Club is a treble choir on Smith Campus with about 50 singers &ndash; sometimes more, sometimes fewer. Members have auditioned and shown at least some baseline singing skills, though many are not music majors or minors and you don&rsquo;t need to be excellent at reading music. If you don&rsquo;t get in, you can take Intro to Choral Singing to develop your skills and try again another semester. If you want more musical challenge, consider auditioning for the Chamber Singers as well.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Glee is a 1-credit course; to earn that credit, members must attend rehearsal twice a week and concerts throughout the year. Fall semester includes classical and contemporary choral music from around the world for Autumn Serenade; pop repertoire for Montage; and hymns* at Vespers to support Friends of the Hampshire County Homeless. Spring semester includes the Iva Dee Hiatt Spring Oratorio, where we collaborate with other college choirs to sing major choral works; Rally Day, where the college celebrates seniors in spectacular hats and we sing Gaudeamus Igitur; and the commencement concert, for which seniors pick favorite songs from their time in Glee.</span></p>

Eighty percent of the portfolio's dividends are donated to&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.smith.edu/finaid/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Smith College Financial Aid</a></strong>&nbsp;(75%) and to the&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.smith.edu/sga" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Student Government Association</a></strong>&nbsp;(25%) for campus-wide activities.&nbsp;</p>

<p>SGC is a network for student gamers at Smith College to connect and play together. Our organization supports both video games, including online gaming and story-driven RPGs, and traditional table top games like Dungeons and Dragons. We recognize the value and history of gaming, in both its cultural relevance and potential as an medium of storytelling. This is particularly relevant at Smith, as the majority of games are male-dominated and present negative or outright unhealthy depictions of women. We aim to create a safe space for women and marginalized people to enjoy gaming in all its facets. Our hope is to expand our members' critical knowledge of games and the variety of narratives they can employ while also enjoying them for their entertainment value.</p>

<p>We, SKDC, are a diverse dance crew for those who enjoy listening to and / or dancing to K-Pop, or just love to dance. K-Pop, or Korean Pop, is a genre of music that originates from South Korea. SSFFS provides a space for fans of all science fiction and fantasy media to come together and explore, discuss, and celebrate their interests. Centered around science fiction &amp; fantasy literature, film, fandom, cosplay, comics, and tabletop gaming &amp; roleplaying, our organization promotes female, queer, and trans stories and experiences in these traditionally male-dominated geek spaces. SSFFS celebrates fans' unapologetic enthusiasm and seeks to foster a community that encourages members to earnestly share their passions.

We offer a variety of science fiction and fantasy related meetings throughout the week, including activities on Mondays, TTRPG one-shots on Wednesdays, discussions on Thursdays, and boffing or media events on Saturdays. We also host an annual Halloween Costume Party in the fall and Faerie Changeling Ball in the spring, as well as excursions off campus, including to local Ren Faires.

<p><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif';">Technology &amp; Education Connecting Cultures (TECC) is a student-run, non-profit organization consisting of Chinese and American university students who persistently improve the standard of living and future prospects in underprivileged Chinese inland regions via summer volunteer teaching and cultural exchange. TECC Smith chapter is founded in 2009; over the course of 9 years, we have sent 30 Smith volunteers to rural China spending a summer that they would never forget.</span></p>

<p>The Smith College Yearbook is a complete collection of memories from all aspects of the very exciting and colorful lives of&nbsp;<span class="x_x_x_x_x_x_x_x_x_x_x_x_x_x_x_x_x_x_text_exposed_show">Smithies in Northampton. The staff collects information and photos from the Smith community and compiles everything into the book to reflect the year as a whole.<br /><br />We believe the book serves two purposes. The first is to document and archive the happenings of Smith in each academics year to aide those who, in the future, want to learn about the history of Smith and its traditions. The second purpose of the yearbook is to provide alumnae with a product through which to explore their memories of Smith. Smithies leave the campus of Northampton with many memories of Smith culture and traditions that are unique to the experience of studying there. The book will help Smithies to remember that culture and those traditions to keep them close to their hearts.</span></p>

<p>Oot oot! The Noteables were founded in 1982 and have been trailblazers ever since. We were the first group to use vocal percussion on campus as well as the first to perform a song originally recorded by a male artist.&nbsp;Because we arrange all of our music ourselves, we&nbsp;have a diverse repertoire spanning various genres and musical eras. As a close-knit group, we pride ourselves on our strong sense of community and ability to work as hard as we play.</p>

<p>The Smiffenpoofs formed in 1936 after a group of Smithies attended a picnic where the Yale Whiffenpoofs were performing. The students were so impressed by the Whiffs&rsquo; camaraderie and musicality that they decided to form the first women&rsquo;s collegiate a cappella group in the nation, modeling their sound after the Whiffs&rsquo; and adopting a derivative name in their honor. As the story goes, on November 23rd, 1936, Smith president William Allan Neilson gave his official approval to the group, gifting them with a leather-bound journal in which to record their history.</p>
<p>The first group of Smiffenpoofs consisted of four seniors and four juniors, hand-picked from campus choirs by the group&rsquo;s co-founders, Sue Becton (&rsquo;38) and Jeanne Thayer (&rsquo;38). They frequently performed with the Whiffenpoofs and other emerging a cappella ensembles, up until WWII. At that time, the Whiffs went off to war and the Poofs joined the war effort as Red Cross nurses. The Poofs did not disband during this period, but continued to perform regularly in area hospitals, bringing music and good cheer to soldiers returning home.</p>
<p>Now, <strong>all these years later</strong>, the Smiffenpoofs have seen numerous changes. We are now one of many cappella groups on campus, and our brother group is the Brown Derbies instead of the Whiffs (though we are still pals, don't worry). That said, the aim of the group&rsquo;s founders remains intact: to expand an understanding and appreciation of vocal music to our community near and far, and to keep our level of camaraderie and harmony up to the highest standard! We still prioritize giving back to our community, and host the annual Friendsgiving Concert to benefit the Northampton Survival Center. Our repertoire still includes old favorites like &ldquo;Manhattan,&rdquo; as well as our rallying call from 1956, &ldquo;Softly,&rdquo; but we have also expanded our sound and style, hitting almost every genre of music (and even dance!). We are proud to represent Smith and welcome singers of all gender expressions, sexual orientations, and racial identities.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Today&rsquo;s Smiffenpoofs are honored to continue the a cappella tradition with as much pride and joy as the group&rsquo;s original eight, and we thank you for your interest and support!&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Smithereens originated in 1945 as the Albright Quartet, becoming the 4th traditionally all-female a cappella group in the country. Since then, we have expanded our group and built a diverse repertoire of music that ranges from classic traditionals to contemporary favorites. We are Smith's Celtic music ensemble. We meet weekly on Tuesday nights from 7-8:30 to rehearse tunes and songs for our various performances. We have one main concert per semester, plus occasional smaller performances. Past performances have included playing at Flavors of Cook Farm, the Smith College Museum of Art, and attending sessions at the Harp. Instruments in the group typically include fiddles, guitars, whistles, and flutes but have also occasionally included harps, cellos, banjos, and one or two bouzoukis, bodhrans, concertinas, and sets of spoons.

<p>Smith College's Vietnamese Students Association was created in 2004. The purpose of SC-VSA is to provide a supportive network and safe space for VSA members while raising awareness of Vietnamese culture and heritage, along with other interests of VSA members. Along with providing that space, we also work to immerse VSA students into the Vietnamese American experience.</p>
<p>Whether it's teaching the Smith community how to make dishes from Vietnamese cuisines such as pho and spring rolls, making lanterns during Lunar New Years, or teaching local students how to read and write Vietnamese; VSA-SC is working to keep Vietnamese culture alive and thriving and involved in issues that are important to this organization. We dive into understanding important topics such as influences or challenges within Vietnamese culture, sexuality/queerness in Vietnamese communities, and understanding both the Vietnamese and Vietnamese American experience. <p>WOZQ, established in 1949, is Smith College&rsquo;s FM station, committed to bringing high-quality programming to the campus and its audience at large. As new forms of media emerge, WOZQ believes it is essential to uphold radio as a unique means of communication and cultural exchange within the community. As an independent, student-run radio station, WOZQ serves as an alternative to corporate media, providing local communities with diverse music, news, and events that may not otherwise reach mainstream audiences. Furthermore, WOZQ is the oldest historically all women&rsquo;s college radio station and provides empowerment through involvement in broadcasting.</p>
<p><br />WOZQ is an FM, educational radio station which endeavors to provide a means of communication and education for members of the Smith College community and Northampton residents. This station maintains an enduring commitment to the Smith College community. At all times, the primary duty of WOZQ is to serve the needs of and desires of this community, as well as that of Northampton.
